Grand Union Village Bridge to A40 Bridge

Meeting Place

We will meet on the Grand Union Village bridge which runs between Adrienne Avenue and Taywood Road

On the Day

You will be greeted by David Posnett who will run through the safety briefing. You will then need to complete a sign-in sheet, confirming you understood the briefing, and giving us emergency contact details. We will keep this sheet for no longer than 21 days after the event to comply with GDPR regulations.

We will supply all the equipment you need, but please bring strong gloves if you have them. You should also bring a drink and a snack as litter picking is thirsty work!

Area Covered

This pick covers the towpath between the Grand Union Village bridge and the A40 bridge, and includes Marnham Fields which runs alongside part of the route.

Local History

A40 Western Avenue

Construction of the A40 we know today was started in the early 1930's. In this photo from 1934 we can it's construction near Northolt. The bridge being built is on Ealing Road/Kensington Road that runs North to South between Northolt and Greenford. We also see a footbridge, which was known locally as the broken bridge. During the war, the army broke the bridge to reduce any risk of the inmates of the nearby prisoner of war camps escaping. The bridge was replaced in the 1990's with a beautiful oak wooden bridge, which ironically is now closed due to structural defects.
